Point 1: Accept Hard Training
Hard training is a staple of martial arts practice. Every now and then, the martial arts instructor will go temporarily nuts and make everyone run round the block. Twice. In the snow. Barefoot. Or you go to a special class that lasts twice as long as usual and goes at a faster pace with no breaks. Or you go to a martial arts training camp where all you do is work out. These kinds of unusual training, which require a lot of physical stamina, build a lot of mental and emotional stamina, too. Instead of wimping out when the instructor tell you to do fifty front kicks without putting your foot down, you do the fifty front kicks. Maybe your quadriceps develops a snarl in it, but at least you did it. You now know you can do something you didn’t know you could do before, and if you can do the fifty front kicks without setting your foot down, it’s entirely possible that you can remember the names of every bone in the human body in order to pass your anatomy class, although you always had your doubts.
Hard training takes many forms. Maybe you have to memorize all the countries in the continent of Africa to pass your African history final, and you just don’t want to do it. You do it anyway. That’s also hard training. (It’s even harder if you do it without whining.) If the only way to deal with your aunt Bernadette is to never respond to her provoking remarks about your politics and you find it incredibly hard to ignore her; but you do it anyway, that’s hard training.
Exercise
Hard training is any difficult process we don’t think we can do but that we do anyway. Succeeding makes us stronger mentally, emotionally and physically. Look for opportunities to do hard training in your life. If you find it hard to go work out after a grueling day at home with the kids, do it anyway.
If you find it hard to admit that you were wrong when you started that argument about Jet Li being hotter than Jackie Chan, admit it and move on.
* It’s a lot about tolerance, patient and willingness to try to gain experience. On one hand, it will stop you from being an ignorant fool. On the other, it’s about giving others a chance to show you what you can do. It’s never about another person trying to do you in. It is only when a person ignores you, you can be sure he does not give a damn about you. Give it a try, it will never hurt and can boost understanding instead.
